Russian Interference

Research into Russian Government ‘influence operations’ in the 2016 EU Referendum and other key votes was pioneered by Byline Times’ sister organisation, the crowdfunding site, by former police officer James Patrick. From early 2017, following a trip to Sweden, Patrick was among the first to understand the depth and sophistication of Vladimir Putin’s online propaganda, on which he wrote the book Alternative War. Meanwhile, the team also broke the story of alleged Russian agent Joseph Mifsud’s meeting with Boris Johnson to discuss Brexit in late 2017, while Byline Times’ executive editor Peter Jukes collaborated with the Observer’s Carole Cadwalladr in revealing the number and nature of Farage-backer Arron Banks’ meetings with the Russian Embassy during the referendum campaign.
